My kids were watching one of the Harry Potter movies this past weekend and since procrastination seemed to be my top priority at the time, I felt obligated to sit and watch. There was a scene in which Harry Potter was buying his first wand. The wand wizard, Mr. Ollivander, was helping and explained, “The wand chooses the wizard, Mr. Potter. It’s not always clear why.”
The wand chooses the wizard. Interesting. Because sometimes that’s how I feel about my wine. I look over the choices, pick up the bottle if I can, imagine the color, texture and taste. Is something magical happening? I can’t conclusively say there isn’t.
But seriously, when I’m choosing wine in a restaurant (or even a small retail location), I sometimes feel that certain staff members are able to work some magic while helping me choose. In fact, it is my experience that the best wine professionals are constantly matching bottles to people. Enabling the wine to choose the wine-o.
So, the question of the day…how do you make sure that your wine has a chance to pick your guest? Certainly, your wine director is the first and most important resource to tackle the job. But, can your wine director be at every table? What if he/she calls in sick? What if your guests are unwilling to ask questions?
My sincere opinion is that technology can help because, with 100% accuracy and reliability, technology will be able to deliver the story of the wine. And the story that is told can be crafted by your wine director in a way that speaks directly to your guests.
Is Technology for You?
Are you reluctant to make a technology move? You should be, it’s not for everyone! But, check out this quick graphic to help you decide.
If you’re still reading, consider this projection: “The number of smartphone users worldwide will surpass 2 billion in 2016, according to new figures from eMarketer…”. The article goes on to remind the reader that the escalating use of smartphones means that marketing campaigns will increasingly need to be mobile-centric (full article).
If you do decide to take the technology plunge, consider a platform that includes a mobile guest experience. We’re talking about a complete and interconnected engagement platform that not only helps you market your wines but also your entire wine program…encouraging guests to visit and return. Recording guest history and offering rewards are benefits to guest engagement but you will also want your enterprise and wine discovered by your mobile clientele.
Tap your inner Mr. Ollivander, get discovered, and match more people to bottles.
At CorkGuru it is our honest and humble mission to continuously strive to match more wine to more people!
